India to Nepal by Road—The Simple Version

Read this first. The full guide below explains every point.

01Choose the border

From Gorakhpur use Sunauli. From Bihar, Raxaul is often easier.

02Carry accepted ID

Indian passport or Election Commission voter ID is the safer official guidance.

03Taking your vehicle?

Carry original vehicle papers and obtain the correct temporary customs permit.

04Keep enough time

Use 7 days for Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu without rushing.

THE JOURNEY, BEFORE THE CHECKLIST

The road begins like any other drive across eastern Uttar Pradesh—tea stalls opening, buses pulling out and the plains still wrapped in morning haze. Then, after Nautanwa, signboards begin to mention Nepal. At Sunauli the road narrows, luggage comes down, documents come out and the holiday suddenly feels real.

Across the gate, Bhairahawa is only the beginning. One road bends west toward the forests and hills below Pokhara; another eventually climbs toward Kathmandu. The kilometres look modest on a map. The drive does not. Nepal rewards travellers who leave early, stop often and resist the temptation to fit three cities into two days.

Yes, You Can Drive from India to Nepal

Yes. India and Nepal are connected by several official land crossings, and road travel is one of the most practical ways to reach Nepal from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Uttarakhand. Indian citizens do not need a tourist visa for Nepal, but they should carry an identity document accepted as proof of Indian nationality.

The right border depends on where you start and where you want to go. Gorakhpur–Sunauli is convenient for Lumbini, Pokhara and many North India itineraries. Raxaul–Birgunj is often practical for Bihar and Kathmandu-bound travellers. Panitanki–Kakarbhitta serves eastern Nepal, while Banbasa–Mahendranagar is useful for western Nepal.

Planning rule: Do not build an itinerary around map-app driving time alone. Border formalities, town traffic, road works, monsoon disruption and mountain driving can add several hours.

Carry These Documents—Not Just Aadhaar

Nepal Immigration's published FAQ says Indian citizens should present a valid Indian passport or an Election Commission of India voter identity card as proof of nationality. It specifically cautions that Aadhaar and a driving licence are not substitutes for a nationality-proving travel document.

  • Valid Indian passport, or
  • Election Commission voter ID
  • Children travelling with parents: appropriate school ID or birth registration as applicable
  • Photocopies and secure digital backups
  • Hotel and emergency contact details
  • Travel insurance suitable for planned activities

Important: Land-border practice and requirements can change. Check the Nepal Department of Immigration and your chosen border office before departure. Do not rely only on social-media posts.

AT THE BORDER

What the Crossing Usually Looks Like

The exact order can vary by crossing and vehicle type, but this is a useful mental model. Follow directions from the authorised immigration, customs and security staff present on the day.

01Stop and organisePark where directed. Keep traveller IDs and original vehicle papers together.
02Traveller formalitiesComplete any identity or entry checks requested at the official counter.
03Vehicle customsApply for the correct temporary vehicle permission and pay only at authorised counters.
04Check every detailMatch registration number, vehicle class and validity dates before leaving.
05Keep receipts accessibleStore permit, receipts, IDs and insurance where they can be shown at checkpoints.
06Enter with daylightRefuel, set offline navigation and begin the Nepal section without rushing.

Use this as orientation—not as a substitute for instructions from border authorities.

Taking Your Own Indian Car or Bike into Nepal

An Indian-registered private vehicle normally needs temporary customs permission—commonly called a Bhansar or temporary import permit—to be driven beyond the permitted border vicinity. Complete the process at the authorised customs point and keep the original permit in the vehicle.

Vehicle document checklist

  • Original registration certificate (RC)
  • Valid driving licence
  • Valid motor insurance papers
  • Pollution-under-control certificate
  • Owner authorisation if driver is not the registered owner
  • Finance/NOC documents where applicable
  • Temporary customs permit and payment receipt
  • Copies of every vehicle document

Permit validity, fees, permitted area and insurance requirements depend on current rules and your vehicle category. Confirm them at customs before paying. Check every entry on the permit—registration number, validity dates and vehicle details—and retain receipts until you leave Nepal.

Never overstay a vehicle permit. Extend it through the proper customs office before expiry or leave Nepal within its validity. Border agents cannot override customs law.

Best India–Nepal Road Borders

Sunauli–BhairahawaNearest major Indian rail hub: Gorakhpur. Strong choice for Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu circuits.
Raxaul–BirgunjPractical for Bihar, Patna and eastern Uttar Pradesh; commonly used for Kathmandu.
Panitanki–KakarbhittaUseful from Siliguri, Darjeeling, Sikkim and West Bengal for eastern Nepal.
Banbasa–MahendranagarUseful from Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh for far-west Nepal.
Jogbani–BiratnagarConvenient for travellers approaching from eastern Bihar.
Rupaidiha–NepalgunjUseful for central-western Nepal and selected pilgrimage or wildlife routes.

Which border should you choose?

Choose the border by the complete journey—not simply the shortest distance to the frontier. A traveller heading to Pokhara may benefit from Sunauli, while someone starting near Patna and focusing on Kathmandu may prefer Raxaul. Check current road conditions on both sides before fixing the route.

Why 280 km Can Take Most of the Day

The Nepal Tourism Board lists both Raxaul–Birgunj–Kathmandu and Sunauli–Bhairahawa–Kathmandu at roughly 280 km from the border town. Actual travel time varies widely because Nepal roads are mountainous and construction or congestion can slow the journey.

RouteApprox. distancePractical planning timeBest use
Gorakhpur → SunauliAbout 95 km2.5–4 hoursBorder arrival
Sunauli/Bhairahawa → LumbiniAbout 25 km45–75 minutesFirst night / pilgrimage

These are conservative planning ranges, not promises. Reconfirm road status shortly before travel, especially during monsoon and major festivals.

How Much Does an India to Nepal Road Trip Cost?

There is no honest single price. Total cost depends on starting city, vehicle type, group size, hotel category, route, permit validity, sightseeing and whether you use your own vehicle or a Nepal-ready commercial vehicle.

A Simple 6-Day Route for Your First Trip

Gorakhpur to Lumbini via SunauliStart early, complete border formalities and keep the first day light.
Lumbini to PokharaVisit Maya Devi Temple early, then continue with daylight margin.
Pokhara sightseeingPhewa Lake, Davis Falls, Gupteshwar Cave and relaxed lakeside time.
Pokhara to KathmanduAllow a full travel day; avoid a tight evening commitment.
Kathmandu ValleyPashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and selected heritage sites.
Kathmandu to India returnLeave early and keep border/traffic buffer before onward trains.

For families with senior citizens or small children, seven or eight days is more comfortable. Avoid combining Kathmandu, Pokhara and Muktinath in an unrealistically short schedule.

Drive Slower Than You Would in the Plains

  • Drive in daylight on unfamiliar hill roads
  • Expect slower speeds than Indian plains
  • Check brakes, tyres and spare wheel before entry
  • Refuel before remote or mountain stretches
  • Use seat belts and avoid overloading
  • Do not drink and drive
  • Keep permit and IDs accessible at checkpoints
  • Download offline maps but follow local diversions
  • Do not schedule a train immediately after border return
  • Carry basic medicines and motion-sickness support

Best time for the drive

October–November and March–April generally offer pleasant touring conditions. Winter is suitable for lower-altitude cultural routes but mornings can be cold. Monsoon travel is possible, yet landslides, reduced visibility and road delays require extra flexibility. High-altitude routes such as Muktinath need separate weather and road checks.

Money, mobile and practical habits

Carry more than one payment method and obtain current currency guidance from authorised banking/customs sources. Do not assume every Indian denomination or digital payment will be accepted. Enable international roaming or purchase a Nepal SIM where eligible, and share your itinerary with family.

FIELD NOTES

What Nobody Tells You Before the Drive

01

A 280 km day can still consume the day

Average speed falls on hill roads. Meals, traffic, road works and photo stops make map estimates optimistic.

02

The permit is worth reading twice

A small error in registration number or validity can become a large problem later. Check before leaving the counter.

03

The best first night may be near the border

If you arrive late, Lumbini or Bhairahawa can be wiser than forcing a long hill drive after dark.

04

Children and senior citizens change the itinerary

More breaks, earlier arrivals and fewer hotel changes usually produce a better family holiday.

05

A return train needs a serious buffer

Do not pair a long Nepal road sector and border crossing with a tightly timed onward train from India.

06

Muktinath is not an “extra stop”

It is a high-altitude journey with different road, weather and health considerations. Give it dedicated days.

India to Nepal Road Trip FAQs

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Nepal?

No tourist visa is required for Indian citizens, but accepted proof of Indian nationality should be carried.

Is Aadhaar enough to enter Nepal?

Nepal Immigration's published FAQ identifies a valid Indian passport or Election Commission voter ID as the appropriate nationality documents and says Aadhaar or a driving licence should not be treated as substitutes.

Can I take my own Indian car to Nepal?

Yes, subject to valid vehicle papers and current Nepal customs requirements, including the appropriate temporary import permit for travel beyond the permitted border area.

Which border is best from Gorakhpur?

Sunauli–Bhairahawa is the most commonly used nearby official crossing and is convenient for Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu circuits.

How many days are enough?

Six days is a workable minimum for Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu, but seven or eight days is more comfortable for families.

Is night driving recommended?

Daylight travel is safer on unfamiliar mountain roads. Avoid planning long hill sections at night.

Can an Indian commercial taxi enter Nepal?

Commercial/passenger vehicles can be subject to different permits and transport rules from private vehicles. Confirm the current rule for the exact vehicle and route before departure.

Are road times reliable during monsoon?

No. Add substantial flexibility because landslides, construction and weather can cause delays or diversions.
